Painting: No more chores

This was painted on a whim in the month of June – right after a few hours of gardening. Although gardening is satisfying in itself, the rest that comes after some intensive work outdoors is as pleasurable.

Painting: Place of our own

This is part of the 2015 series that I painted for a friend. It’s inspired by the Wechat startup screen and by the members of her family (her, her other half, and their cat fondly known as Fatty). What do you feel when you see this? It reminds me of the scene in Arthur Christmas…

Victorian jacket with Chinese knots

This has been one of the more challenging patterns that I’ve attempted. I really liked the purple jacket shown on the cover and tried to make one without the trimmings. This was a project that started last year and I have only just finished it today. It’s not perfectly sewn but I can work on…

Tutorial: Cowl neck square top

Happy 2016! How did you spend the first day of the new year? I spent a few hours sewing and it was delightful. Remember square tops and how easy those are? Here’s a little twist to the square top by lengthening it into a tunic and then adding a cowl neck and  a thick sheer…

Crocheted hood

Here’s a Xmas present I just completed for a friend, a hood that can be added on top of any outfit. It keeps the head, ears, and neck warm. Easy to pull on and off. Took me 6 hours to complete but I’m not the fastest crocheter around. What do you think? 🙂

4 sided Cardboard Xmas tree

I promised to share what I did with the leftover cardboard from the previous Xmas tree project. Here it is! Take the set on the right and slide it on top of the pair on the left.  The pairs will criss cross and form this shape. Now to decorate! I have leftover acrylic Paint so…

Easy cardboard Xmas tree with lights

Got some cardboard boxes lying around? Perhaps from a recent Amazon purchase, a thanksgiving black Friday sale, or from a store nearby. They are so easily transformed into Xmas trees for small spaces! First, decide on the size you want with the boxes available. Turn the box so you are looking the side with the…

Reversible dog jacket

Some time back, we bought Coco a winter coat from Wal-Mart. It is pink, fits really well, and even has a hood. That means the winter coat can double up as a raincoat. It finally occurred to me to use that as a template. Well, it was the husband’s idea actually. So I grabbed some…

Halloween 2015

It’s been a while. Took 2 sewing classes, went to the Renaissance Festival in homemade costumes (mixed with pieces from the closet). celebrated birthdays every weekend in October, and reused costumes for Halloween. Whoo! Hope your October has been a fun-filled one too. Here are pics of our costumes for the festival and for Halloween.…

Painting: Bridge to clouds

First attempt at drawing a man-made structure. Prices shown below in reverse chronological order. If there could be a bridge to your favorite scenery, what would that be? I love looking at clouds. This would be my special place.

Pirate costume in the making

Halloween is just round the corner. This year, we are going to be pirates!  Here’s what I whipped up yesterday for the top. A red off-shoulder tunic top and a black vest that could pass off as a waist cincher. I have to embellish the outfit to make it even more pirate like. Any ideas?…

Painting: Resting Butterfly

Found this pic of a butterfly online and painted my own. Here are the process pics. Started by sketching in pencil. Had to fix proportions several times. Butterfly isn’t done yet but the background needs to be painted before the white edges can be added. Time to paint the grass green. Add details to the…

Painting: Square Rose

Here’s my square rose being ‘built’ bit by bit on. 8×10″ canvas. Add shading with red and black. Pencilled in leaves, colored red then shaded with black, red, and yellow. Now for some Green leaves with yellow and black. Added black to the Rose. Then some purple leaves. Maybe a few multicolored (purple, red, and…

Painting: Star gazing in the forest

Saw this image some time back and knew I just had to use it for painting practice. Took a screenshot on my phone and have been wanting to paint a version of my own. Finally painted it today. It took layers of blue, black, and white acrylic paint to get the basic sky colors done.…

Beginner’s sewing class #1

I started attending a 6-week Beginner’s sewing class with Sarah’s Fabrics this week and learned so much! Week 1 is theory, Week 2 covers pattern adjustments and cutting, Weeks 3 through 6 will be sewing. This knowledge would have been so beneficial if I had learned it earlier on. Oh well, better late than never!…

Refashioning a long dress

Made this dress some time ago and thought I’d have loads of opportunities to wear it. I did wear it. Once. So I guess it needs some refashioning. Chopped off the bottom to make a new skirt. The dress itself is updated with white lace at the hem. Just like the skirt.:) Hope more occasions…

Shorts crazed weekend

This week has been really hot and warranting multiple showers a day. Especially if I work in the garden. I didn’t have enough shorts in my closet and didn’t want to venture out in this heat to buy some. So the only solution is to shop online. Just kidding! I made some with the pattern…

Sporty orange and black top

This is a no pattern, on-the-spot design. Turned out pretty okay and fits me like a glove. Started off with me wanting to create a crossover bust top. There wasn’t enough fabric to make it a one piece cut. So I had to make the bust and bottom pieces separately. Realized it was too low…

Cross over layering top

This fabric is probably 5 years old and has been waiting for its turn to be transformed into an outfit. So I adjusted the recent pattern of a blouse and made it a crossover top. Great for this incredibly hot summer because it’s light and white. I made a pair of shorts as well so…

Refashioning Xmas turquoise skirt

Remember the turquoise skirt I made last Xmas? I decided that the raw hem just wouldn’t do anymore. Also, I wanted some length added. So I cut out a rectangular strip,  folded it I’m half lengthwise, and sewed it on to the edge me the skirt. For a more unique look, the new hem is…

Summer short sleeved 2 buttoned blazer

With the same beginning pattern in the last two posts,  I created this summer blazer that has two snap on buttons. I added length to the bodice as well as the bottom of the collar so that the tips are long enough to overlap. Sew the pieces together and add darts where necessary to give…

Black and green zipper snap top

Using the new blouse pattern that I drafted in my previous project, I made a new top! Tweaked the design a little. There is no collar on this piece. I changed out the buttons for a zipper and then added snaps to the top and bottom of the zipper to hide the ends. The pleat…

New non-knit blouse

I usually sew knit tops as they’re such forgiving fabrics. However it was time to try something new. After working on the pattern for the Mr, I thought it would be possible to make a pattern out of a blouse that I really like. So I spent Wednesday afternoon working on the pattern, cutting out…

Painting: Swing on Falls

Went to hobby lobby on Tuesday and bought a framed canvas, some blue paint (the paint by numbers set didn’t require blue). I also got some pearlescent paint which shows up at an angle. How cool is that? Here is my new painting, Swing on Falls. Here are process pics. This swing is far away…

Another tie for the Mr.

After redoing the pattern to ensure symmetry, I made another tie for the Mr. Cut out the pieces,  sew the 3 shell pieces together. Iron on interfacing. Sew on tie tip lining, invert and press. Fold edges inwards twice to hide raw edges and then hand sew the shell edges shut. More process pics in…

Refashion: corduroy jeans to skirt

I love corduroy jeans and haven’t donned denim jeans in years. I love the texture, the warmth it provides, and the stretch of the material. The zipper on a pair of old comfy cords broke so I refashioned it into a skirt. I decided on a length that I wanted, added an inch and then…

Tutorial: Men’s Tie

It’s been a while since I made anything for the Mr. and it just so happens that I’ve been looking at Pinterest ideas on men’s ties. So this is my first attempt at tie-making! First, I got an old (really old…) tie out from the closet that hasn’t been worn since the 90s (a friend…

Painting: Sweet pea plant

I must have been bitten by the painting bug because here is another piece! The same leftover acrylic paints were used for this project. Decided to add a frame by using clear tape to mark the sides and to hold it to the table. My inspiration came from my mini garden. Months ago, I purchased…

Freehand painting

This isn’t sewing related but I wanted to share it anyway. Did some freehand painting today with leftover paints and it was liberating! Have a lovely week ahead! This is the before shot, before the perforated area got digitally cropped out. I’m leaving it for now so I can hang the painting up somewhere. These…

White doggy dress with gold trim

Here is Coco in her White dress with gold trim. This is very similar to the white and pink dress in that this also has a pleat in the back. It differs in that gold trim replaced binding and sleeves were added. The pleat is also accented with gold trim folded over on itself and…

White doggy summer dress with pink binding

It’s been a while since my last post but I got busy with my sewing machine again this past week. I’ve been shortening jeans and a blouse for a friend, making an impromptu orange dress for myself, and two new outfits for Coco. Using a lightweight and stretchy fabric, I cut out 2 sets of…

Baby bibs from t-shirts

A friend who’s expecting a baby boy came over today to craft. We cut up some t-shirts that I bought during a sale some time back to make baby bibs. There was a blue 5XL t-shirt, a purple XXL t-shirt, and a scrap grey and white bit of fabric. She brought a pattern found on…

Multi length sleeveless dress

My friend Ella came by for a sewing session today and made a new top for herself by tracing out a shirt she had. She made some interesting changes: increased the length and gave it a subtle high low hem, lowered the neckline, left off the collar, made it sleeveless. I’ll share a pic if…

Doggy pyjamas

This references a doggy outfit I designed a few years ago. The original design is cut out of sweatpants to save on sewing the chest seam. This time, I cut it out of fabric which meant I could work on a flat surface instead of a pre-sewn tube.  Here’s the final doggy outfit with back…

Pawfect by Coco business black dress

Oh yes, you read it right. Even little dogs need business attires. Why? We go out dressed to the nines and if we bring our little one with us, we might as well dress her like she means business too. Ready to take on the world – Woman and Dog. 😀 This is actually for…

U-neck cropped top to V-neck dress

This is my latest project! More details to follow. 🙂 Sometime in early January, I was browsing JCP.com for work pants and chanced upon a cropped top in the sale section. At $3.99 per piece (U.P. $16.00), I saw lots of possibilities for refashioning. Especially since the cropped top look isn’t what I usually go…

Crochet granny square blanket

I started crocheting a granny square last Christmas. Without much planning, it got bigger and bigger…. and eventually consumed 2 skeins of super saver yarn. I stopped for a couple of months because the last bit of yarn was so tangled. The hubs kindly helped to untangle everything earlier so I’m officially out of brown…

Doggy Infinity Dress

Super simple outfit for an elegant look. Two rectangular strips of fabric, one long enough to wrap around your furry one’s body twice around easily. The other, long enough to be pleated yet still cover your furry one’s torso from side to ride.  Connect the two so it looks like an apron. Tie around your…

More doggy outfits for winter

Hello all! I’ve made 3 outfits for Coco in the last few weeks – 2 dog tees upcycled from t-shirt scraps left over from a sewing weekend some time back. For a little dog like Coco, the top section (neckline to just under the sleeves) of an M sized tshirt was enough to create a…

Crochet a Doggy winter scarf

The weather station’s predicting an arctic blast of sorts and my friend’s short hair dog will be really cold. So I offered to crochet a scarf for Sophie, the dog. Here is an in progress pic. The left end has larger holes for buttons to go through. Kept the other rows tighter for warmth. Sophie’s…

xmas turquoise skirt

It was xmas eve and I didn’t have anything I wanted to wear over black leggings and under a furry black top. I have black skirts, long skirts, but none that looked right for the season. The only logical thing to do then, is to sew myself one! I saw a tutorial on pinterest about…

Striped box

I am so glad that I got my hot glue gun. It’s been so much fun crafting with it. Here’s another pretty storage box made with just the hot glue gun, upholstery fabric, and a cardboard box. Made little bows for the sides and a handle with remnant fabric. Finally used up this fabric that…
